In the afternoon hours of September 29, 2021, the city of Pueblo, Colorado, was rocked by a violent double shooting that claimed the life of 37-year-old Carlos Antonio Lerma Jr. The incident unfolded in the 2100 block of Wyoming Avenue, where police were dispatched around 12:03 p.m. to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, an officer discovered Lerma lying face down on the sidewalk.
Despite immediate efforts to render aid and his subsequent transport to a local hospital, his injuries proved fatal, and he died later that day.
The shooting left not only a grieving family but also a second male victim who was fortunate enough to survive. This individual was driven to a hospital by a private citizen and was last reported to be in stable condition. The Pueblo Police Department's Crimes Against Persons Section immediately launched a homicide investigation into the tragic events that had transpired. Their efforts quickly centered on identifying a person of interest in connection with the deadly shooting.
Through their investigation, detectives identified 36-year-old Andrew Baros as the primary suspect in the double shooting and the resulting homicide of Carlos Lerma. An arrest warrant was swiftly issued for Baros, who faced grave charges of 1st Degree Murder and Attempted 1st Degree Murder. For a week, the suspect remained at large, with law enforcement actively seeking his whereabouts. The search came to a conclusion when Baros turned himself into the Pueblo police. He was subsequently booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the shooting has not been publicly released by authorities as the legal process moves forward.
