In the small city of Monte Vista, Colorado, the life of 14-year-old Aaliyah Annalyse Ranee Salazar was tragically cut short on August 7, 2022. Aaliyah, a vibrant teenager who had just graduated from 8th grade and was eagerly anticipating her freshman year at Monte Vista High School, was fatally shot in the head while filming a TikTok dance video at a friend's home.
She was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, and sister, known for her outgoing personality and her ability to make friends wherever she went.
On that fateful Sunday afternoon, police were dispatched to a residence on Monroe Street where they found Aaliyah unconscious and with a gunshot wound. Emergency services arrived to find no signs of life. Investigations revealed that Aaliyah had been with two other female juveniles, creating videos when the incident occurred. A video taken just before the shooting showed Aaliyah dancing while someone in the background was reportedly 'fiddling with something.' One of the teenagers present told investigators that she saw another girl point a Glock 19 pistol at Aaliyah and fire.
The investigation led to the arrest of three individuals. Two juvenile females, who have not been named publicly, were taken into custody and charged with reckless manslaughter and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. The owner of the firearm, 21-year-old Emiliano Vargas, was also arrested. While it is believed he was not present at the time of the shooting, Vargas faces charges of providing or permitting a juvenile to possess a firearm, as he allegedly kept the weapon in a place where the juveniles could easily access it.
The community of Monte Vista was left reeling from the loss of a young life filled with promise. Aaliyah's family, particularly her grandfather and guardian, Gary Salazar, with whom she lived and shared a close bond, expressed their profound grief. Aaliyah was remembered for her love of dancing, making TikTok videos, and her deep affection for animals. Her family and friends gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor her memory, celebrating the joy she brought to their lives while mourning the future that was taken from her. The legal proceedings against the three suspects are being handled by the Colorado Attorney General's Office.
