In the quiet community of Chimayó, New Mexico, a day of tragedy unfolded on January 26, 1991, forever marking the life of Glen Michael Huber, a 35-year-old White male and a dedicated New Mexico State Police Officer. What began as a domestic dispute spiraled into a violent rampage, ultimately claiming seven lives, including that of Officer Huber. The incident was set in motion when Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Martinez arrived at a residence to serve a restraining order on Ricky
Abeyta, a 29-year-old local man.
As Deputy Martinez attempted to carry out his duty, he was met with gunfire from Abeyta and was fatally shot. Officer Huber, who was in the vicinity investigating an unrelated matter, responded to the sound of the gunshots. Upon his arrival at the scene, he too was ambushed by Abeyta. Before he could fully exit his patrol car, Officer Huber was shot and killed. The assailant, armed with a rifle, then continued his deadly assault, killing five civilians who were at the residence.
Following the horrific events, a massive manhunt was launched for Ricky Abeyta, who had fled into the surrounding hills. The search involved numerous law enforcement officers. Abeyta eventually surrendered to authorities the following day. He was subsequently charged with multiple counts of murder for the deaths of Officer Glen Michael Huber, Deputy Jerry Martinez, and the five civilians.
In November 1991, Ricky Abeyta stood trial for his crimes. He was convicted on four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, and one count of involuntary manslaughter. The court sentenced him to four consecutive life sentences, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life in prison for the devastating loss of life he caused on that fateful winter day in Rio Arriba County.
