Initially, the investigation led police to arrest 29-year-old Carlos Escudero based on information provided by an informant, 27-year-old Julian Romero. However, further investigation revealed that Escudero was not the perpetrator.
Witnesses and cell phone records confirmed that Escudero was elsewhere at the time of Clark's death, leading to the charges against him being dropped. In addition to the identification of the primary suspect, the case also involved the search for Clark's missing vehicle, a 2007 black Ford Mustang with New Mexico license plate LRS-778. The car had a distinctive white stripe along the bottom with the word 'Mustang' on it, but it was not found at the homicide scene. The missing vehicle was another aspect of the investigation that authorities were keen to resolve.
