The New Mexico State Police is releasing more information about a man who was a person of interest a homicide investigation. Mark D. Spence, 55, of Chama, was found dead Thursday. State police said Spence was wanted for questioning in the death of Michael Moats, 29, of Chama. Moats was found dead Wednesday by the Chama Marshal’s Office inside a local business. Investigators have not said how Moats died.
State police said they obtained a search warrant for Spence’s home and found evidence related to Moats’s death. But when they tried to find Spence, they learned he had been reported missing to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office.

The body of Mark D. Spence, 55, of Chama, was located on the west side of the Cumbres Pass, near the summit, on Thursday afternoon, the press release indicates. According to the press release, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate a homicide in Chama on Wednesday, March 14, at the request of the Chama Police Department. The investigation began when the Chama Marshal's Office located a deceased male inside a local business. The victim was identified as Michael Moats, 29, of Chama. As a result of the investigation, a person of interest was identified as Spence, a Chama resident. State police investigators obtained a search warrant for Spence's residence. During the search, investigators say they located evidence related to the homicide of Moats. An arrest warrant was issued for Spence for the charge of an open count of murder. When officers attempted to locate Spence, they were advised that he was reported as a missing person to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office.

Chama, NM – On March 14, 2018, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was requested by the Chama Police Department to investigate a homicide. The investigation began when the Chama Marshal’s Office located a deceased male inside a local business. The victim was identified as Michael Moats of Chama. As a result of the investigation, a person of interest was identified as Mark D. Spence of Chama, NM. State police investigators obtained a search warrant for Mr. Spence’s residence. During the search of the residence, investigators located evidence related to the homicide of Mr. Moats. An arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Spence for the charge of an open count of murder. When officers attempted to locate Mr. Spence, they were advised he was reported as a missing person to the Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Office. On March 15, 2018, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the body of Mr. Spence was located on the west side of Cumbres Pass near the summit. The New Mexico State Police are investigating Mr. Spence’s death. The Office of the Medical Investigator will be making a determination as to the cause of death. This case remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau.
