On a summer evening in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the life of 33-year-old Hispanic/Latino male Adam Porras was tragically cut short. On July 10, 2021, at the Las Brisas apartments on Cardenas Drive SE, Porras was shot. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly before 5 p.m. to find him suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Albuquerque Police Department immediately launched a homicide
investigation into the shooting. In the course of their investigation, detectives identified 26-year-old David Martinez as a person of interest in the case. It was also discovered that Martinez had an outstanding felony probation warrant that was unrelated to the homicide.
Over a month later, on August 20, 2021, law enforcement officers moved to apprehend Martinez. Detectives from a specialized apprehension unit had located him at a residence on Arno Street SE. As officers approached, Martinez attempted to flee in a car, driving through a fence in the backyard. He then exited the vehicle armed with a rifle and continued to flee on foot, ignoring commands to surrender. As he ran into traffic on Broadway Boulevard SE, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and Martinez was critically wounded. Following this series of events, David Martinez was formally charged with the murder of Adam Porras.
