On October 21, 2021, during the filming of the Western movie 'Rust' near Santa Fe, New Mexico, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, aged 42, tragically lost her life. The incident occurred when actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm, a Pietta. 45 Colt revolver, which unexpectedly contained a live round. The projectile struck Hutchins in the chest, fatally wounding her, and then injured director Joel Souza, who was standing behind her.
Emergency services were called immediately, and Hutchins was airlifted to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, where she was pronounced dead.
The aftermath of Hutchins' death led to extensive investigations by the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In January 2023, both Alec Baldwin and the film's armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, were charged with involuntary manslaughter. Baldwin pleaded not guilty, and in April 2023, the charges against him were dismissed. However, in January 2024, Baldwin was re-indicted on the same charge, to which he again pleaded not guilty. His trial commenced in July 2024 but was dismissed with prejudice after it was revealed that the prosecution had withheld evidence from the defense.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed faced her own legal proceedings. In addition to the involuntary manslaughter charge, she was later charged with tampering with evidence. In March 2024, a jury found her guilty of involuntary manslaughter but acquitted her of the evidence tampering charge. She was subsequently sentenced to 18 months in prison in April 2024. Additionally, David Halls, the first assistant director on 'Rust,' pleaded no contest to a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received a suspended sentence with six months of probation.
The tragic incident has had a profound impact on the film industry, prompting widespread discussions about on-set safety protocols, particularly concerning the use of firearms during productions. In honor of Halyna Hutchins, the film 'Rust' was eventually completed, with her widower, Matthew Hutchins, joining as an executive producer. The film premiered at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage in Torun, Poland, in November 2024, dedicated to her memory. The premiere began with a minute of silence, and the audience applauded after the screening, reflecting the industry's respect and remembrance for Hutchins' contribution to cinema.
