In the quiet community of Las Cruces, New Mexico, the life of a 33-year-old Caucasian woman, Brittney Rochelle Skaggs, was tragically cut short on February 23, 2022. The harrowing events of that day unfolded at a trailer park on Doña Ana Road, leaving neighbors shocked and a community in mourning.
On that fateful Wednesday, Skaggs had sought refuge at a friend's home, attempting to distance herself from her violent boyfriend, Steven Valdez.
A friend of Skaggs later recounted to the police a history of abuse, including allegations that Valdez had previously thrown knives at her and attempted to drown her. The situation escalated when Valdez appeared at the friend's trailer. After being confronted, he struck the friend with the butt of his handgun.
The violence then turned toward Skaggs. Valdez chased her into a back bedroom where she tried to fend him off. He then fired his handgun five times, striking her in the arm and abdomen. In October 2023, a jury found 45-year-old Steven Valdez guilty of the murder of Brittney Skaggs. His conviction also included charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer. It was revealed that Valdez had a significant criminal history spanning two decades, with multiple arrests for violent crimes. In November 2023, he was sentenced to 45 years in prison for his crimes.
