Briona White, a 22-year-old student from Kansas State University, was fatally shot on August 6, 2015, in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood on the city's Far South Side. She was walking with her 20-year-old boyfriend when both were targeted in a shooting that saw them fired upon more than a dozen times. White was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries. The young man with her, reportedly a former gang member, died at the scene.
Police investigations into the shooting remain open, with no arrests reported.
White was studying to become an orthodontist and was remembered by friends and family for her positive spirit and aspirations. Her tragic death was part of an ongoing pattern of violence in the city, which highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing gang-related crime and random acts of violence.
