In the autumn of 2014, the life of 19-year-old Christian Obeng, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short in a burst of violence. On the evening of October 2nd, gunshots echoed through the Upland Gardens apartment complex in Worcester, Massachusetts. When police arrived shortly before 5:30 p.m., they discovered a chaotic scene. Obeng was found on the ground with grave injuries, and another 26-year-old man had also been shot, though his wounds were not life-threatening.
Despite being rushed to a hospital, Christian Obeng succumbed to his injuries the following day.
The investigation into the shooting, which was described by prosecutors as gang-related, led to the arrests of three individuals. Brothers Fathi and Ahmad Jaara, along with a third man, Dominic Bonneville, were accused of going to the apartment complex and provoking a confrontation by banging on a window and challenging the residents to come outside. In the ensuing events, Obeng was fatally shot in the back of the head. Initially, both Fathi Jaara and his brother Ahmad were charged with being accessories after the fact to the shooting.
As the legal process unfolded, the charges against some of the suspects were elevated. In March 2016, a grand jury indicted Fathi Jaara on a charge of murder. Dominic Bonneville was also charged with murder in connection with Obeng's death. However, in December 2016, a Worcester Superior Court jury found Dominic Bonneville not guilty, and he was subsequently released from custody. His defense attorney had argued that Bonneville was not present at the scene of the shooting and that there was no physical evidence connecting him to the crime.
