On a summer evening in New Bedford, Massachusetts, the life of 19-year-old Marcelo Jean Francois, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 11, 2015, Francois was in Harrington Park when he was fatally shot. The incident, described as a senseless act of violence, sent ripples of shock and grief through the community. Francois, a father of two young children, was remembered by friends and family for his kind and caring nature.
In the wake of his death, those who knew him gathered to mourn and honor his memory, organizing events that included a charity basketball game to support his children.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Syrelle Grace, who was 18 years old at the time, was identified and arrested in connection with the murder of Marcelo Jean Francois. On June 15, 2015, just days after the shooting, Grace was arraigned in New Bedford District Court on a murder charge. During the court appearance, he reportedly hid his face from view. Underscoring the seriousness of the allegations against him, Grace was ordered to be held without bail as the legal proceedings began.
The case against Syrelle Grace moved through the justice system, and in 2017, he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including manslaughter and armed robbery with a gun, in connection with the 2015 killing of Marcel Francois. For his role in the violent death that occurred on the basketball court in Harrington Park, the Taunton man was sentenced to serve 13 to 18 years in prison. A judge also ordered that Grace serve three years of probation following the completion of his prison sentence.
