In the early morning hours of March 6, 2016, a party in a vacant Chelsea, Massachusetts apartment on Washington Avenue turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 19-year-old Pablo Villeda. The gathering, attended by about 50 young people, was shattered by gunfire that left Villeda fatally wounded and six other individuals, ranging in age from 15 to 22, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Another person sustained injuries unrelated to the gunfire.
Villeda was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly led authorities to a suspect, 16-year-old Emanuel Marrero of Lynn, who had recently moved from Chelsea. Marrero was arrested the night after the shooting and was charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Investigators believe Marrero acted as the sole gunman. Reports suggest that a disagreement between Marrero and Villeda that began on social media may have preceded the shooting. Marrero, who was known to Villeda, allegedly brought a. 40 caliber handgun to the party and was seen displaying it before the confrontation. Under Massachusetts law, Marrero was to be tried as an adult due to the severity of the charges.
In June 2016, a grand jury indicted Emanuel Marrero, then 17, on a charge of first-degree murder, along with assault and weapons charges. Another teenager, 16-year-old Efrain Vega, was indicted on a firearm possession charge in connection to the incident. On March 7, 2019, just as his trial was about to begin, Emanuel Marrero, then 19, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Pablo Villeda. He also pleaded guilty to six counts of armed assault with intent to murder for the injuries sustained by the other victims. A judge sentenced him to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
