On a Sunday night in Chelsea, Massachusetts, the life of a young Hispanic man, Santos David Canizales, was tragically cut short. On October 8, 2023, the 23-year-old male was in the area of Congress Avenue and Shurtleff Street when violence erupted. At approximately 10:23 p.m., the sound of gunfire prompted multiple 911 calls to the Chelsea Police Department. When first responders arrived at the scene, they discovered Canizales on the ground, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed him to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting immediately began, with dozens of evidence markers lining the road where the incident occurred. Authorities pledged to do everything possible to find those responsible for what they described as a tragedy where a young life was cut short due to illegal guns. The search for the perpetrator did not last long. Investigators identified 28-year-old Edgar Nerys as the individual who allegedly shot and killed Canizales.
A few days later, on a Wednesday, the investigation led police to South Boston. Aware of Nerys's schedule, investigators lay in wait for him as he arrived for a routine monthly meeting with his probation officer. There, members of the State Police, Chelsea Police, and Boston Police took him into custody without incident. Nerys was subsequently charged with murder and firearm offenses. He was scheduled for arraignment in Chelsea District Court, marking a swift turn in the case as the community mourned the loss of Santos David Canizales.
