In the early hours of March 13, 2016, a night out with friends took a tragic and fatal turn for 26-year-old Larry Santiago Jr. of Ludlow, Massachusetts. Santiago was shot and killed while sitting in his own SUV outside the Open Door Cafe in Ludlow at approximately 12:44 a.m.. The incident stemmed from what was described as a senseless argument between friends who had been celebrating a mutual friend's birthday.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as Jorge
Concepcion-Pesquera, a 22-year-old resident of Springfield. Witnesses reported that Concepcion-Pesquera and Santiago were friends. The dispute reportedly began when Santiago asked Concepcion-Pesquera to get out of his car. In response to what he perceived as disrespect, Concepcion-Pesquera fired 13 shots into the vehicle, with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest taking Santiago's life.
An extensive investigation led to the arrest of Concepcion-Pesquera, who was charged with murder. His trial took place in July 2017, where a Hampden Superior Court jury deliberated before reaching a verdict. On July 20, 2017, Jorge Concepcion-Pesquera was found guilty of second-degree murder. During the sentencing, the judge described the crime as an "absolutely senseless murder." Concepcion-Pesquera was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years. The conviction and sentencing brought a measure of legal closure to the family of Larry Santiago Jr., who was remembered as a father to two children.
