On a Tuesday afternoon in Easton, Massachusetts, the 8th of November, 2016, the quiet of a wooded area off Pond Street was broken by a grim discovery. Two young boys, out riding their bicycles, stumbled upon the body of a man lying about 25 yards into the woods. The man, later identified as 35-year-old Daniel Gerald Smith, was unconscious and bleeding from a gunshot wound. The boys alerted their mother, who promptly called 911. Emergency services arrived at the scene and rushed Smith, a former Easton resident who had been living in Florida, to a local hospital. He was later airlifted to a Boston hospital, where he remained in critical condition for three days before succumbing to his injuries on November 11th.
The investigation into Smith's death, which was quickly ruled a homicide, led authorities to identify a suspect: Michael Arthur Noguera, a 47-year-old man also from Florida. Investigators determined that Smith and Noguera were traveling companions who had driven from Florida to Massachusetts together. The two had known each other from work and had been on the road for about five weeks. Their journey was allegedly funded by illicit activities, including spending stolen money and selling illegal firearms. A dispute over money is believed to have been the motive for the murder. The day before the shooting, Smith and Noguera had checked into a hotel in nearby Brockton. They were even pulled over by Brockton police that night, with Smith driving his red 2016 Mazda sedan and Noguera in the passenger seat.
Following the shooting, Noguera fled the state in Smith's car. An intense manhunt was launched, with police appealing to the public for help in locating the stolen vehicle. The investigation moved swiftly, and just four days after the shooting, on November 12th, Michael Noguera was apprehended in a trailer in Conway, South Carolina. The stolen Mazda was recovered from a motel parking lot in North Carolina. Noguera was extradited back to Massachusetts to face justice. After a two-week trial in February 2020, a jury found Michael Arthur Noguera guilty of first-degree murder, armed robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle, and carrying an illegal firearm.
