On a summer evening in Boston, tragedy struck at the intersection of Blue Hill Avenue and Cheney Street. It was July 6, 2017, when 17-year-old Christopher Menard, a Black male, was fatally shot in the Grove Hall area of Roxbury. The incident, which also resulted in the injury of a 14-year-old boy, unfolded with startling proximity to law enforcement, as two Boston Police officers on their beat were less than 50 feet away when the shots were fired.
They were on the scene within seconds of hearing the gunfire.
The brazen nature of the shooting, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., highlighted the ongoing struggles with violence in the neighborhood. Menard was rushed to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The 14-year-old victim was taken to Boston Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries to his leg. The Boston Police Department, in conjunction with the Suffolk County District Attorney's office, immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, and on the following Monday, the Boston Police Fugitive Unit arrested 18-year-old Khamonie McCalop of Roxbury. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Christopher Menard. Authorities stated their belief that the shooting was gang-related. McCalop was arraigned in Roxbury Municipal Court the day after his arrest. The arrest marked a significant development in a case that brought a measure of closure to a community shaken by the violent loss of a young life.
