On a spring evening in Boston, a young Black man named Chris Joyce, 23, was visiting with family and friends in Jamaica Plain, a neighborhood he knew well from his childhood. The date was May 4, 2018, a time that should have been filled with celebration for Joyce and his family. He was on the cusp of a major life achievement, just weeks away from graduating from Salem State University. The first in his family to earn a college degree, he was looking forward to a career as an accountant.
His loved ones described him as intelligent, lovable, and a spark of life, a precious jewel who was never in trouble.
That evening, around 9:41 p.m., as Joyce stood with a group of people near 277 Centre Street, the lively sounds of the neighborhood were shattered by gunfire. Boston Police officers on patrol nearby heard the shots and rushed to the scene. They found two men with serious gunshot wounds. One was Joyce, and the other was 58-year-old Clayborn Blair, a Navy veteran and father of three. Both men were rushed to local hospitals but were pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities later stated that Joyce and Blair were innocent victims who were not the intended targets of what they believe was gang-related violence.
The community and Joyce's family were left reeling from the senseless act that cut short a promising future. In the days following the shooting, an investigation was launched. Homicide detectives meticulously reviewed surveillance footage from the area. The video captured a suspect getting out of a white Ford Fusion, walking toward the group of about 15 people, and opening fire. Investigators were able to track the vehicle on ten different cameras and identified the man, in part, by his distinctive sneakers.
Eight days after the killings, on May 12, 2018, police arrested Wilvin Guity, a 28-year-old from Dorchester. He was charged with two counts of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. For the grieving families, the arrest brought a small measure of comfort, though nothing could fill the void left by their loss. The legal process moved forward, and in July 2022, a jury found Guity guilty of two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Christopher Joyce and Clayborn Blair, ensuring the individual responsible for the tragic loss of two innocent lives would be held accountable.
