In the early morning hours of June 30, 2018, the summer air in Boston's Brighton neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunfire. When police arrived at the scene on Faneuil Street, they discovered two young men, 27-year-old Jeffrey Montaque of Cambridge and 26-year-old Wilfred Peters of Brighton, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
The shooting was believed to have been a targeted attack.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to identify a suspect, 20-year-old Nicholas Antoine of the South End. According to prosecutors, Montaque and Peters were at a small gathering at Peters' home on the night of the shooting. At some point during the gathering, Antoine was asked to leave. It is alleged that Antoine then went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and returned to the party, where he opened fire on Montaque and Peters before fleeing the scene. Ballistics evidence suggested that only one firearm was used in the fatal shootings.
Following the identification of Antoine as the primary suspect, a warrant was issued for his arrest on two counts of murder and multiple firearm-related charges. However, Antoine had fled the Boston area, prompting a search that extended beyond Massachusetts. Several months later, in December 2018, Nicholas Antoine was located and apprehended in Hampton, Georgia. He was arrested by U.S. Marshals and deputies from the Clayton County Sheriff's office and was subsequently held without bail.
