On a winter morning in Boston, a party in the neighborhood of Mattapan turned into a scene of tragedy, ending the life of 29-year-old Jeudy Romero. The male victim, a Black / African American U.S. Army veteran and father, was fatally shot on Sunday, February 3, 2019. Romero, who had served in the war in Afghanistan, was pronounced dead at the scene on Goodale Road from gunshot wounds.
The events leading to the shooting began at a house party where an argument broke out.
John Patterson, also 29, was reportedly involved in the altercation and was asked to leave after he brandished a knife. A short time later, Patterson returned to the party, this time with a firearm. Witnesses reported that he fired multiple shots in a hallway, striking Romero. Following the shooting, Patterson allegedly took Romero's car and fled the area.
Boston Police responded to a call for gunshots just before 10 a.m. and discovered Romero. Their investigation quickly led them to Patterson. Officers spotted the victim's vehicle and, after Patterson initially sped away, found it abandoned. They soon located Patterson on foot and arrested him. He was subsequently charged with murder and firearm offenses and was ordered held without bail.
In a surprising turn, a relative of Romero later claimed that Patterson and Romero were brothers-in-law and had gone to the party together. The relative suggested that the two were not fighting with each other but with other attendees. According to this family member, when the fight broke out, Patterson retrieved a gun from Romero's car and fired, not intending to hit his brother-in-law. This account painted a more complex picture of the devastating incident that cut short the life of a young father and veteran.
