On a summer evening in Milton, Massachusetts, the life of 25-year-old Marquis Simmons was tragically cut short. On July 10, 2021, at approximately 6 p.m. on Belvoir Road, Simmons was shot and killed near his family's home. He had just dismounted his moped when the fatal shots were fired from a few yards away. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center for emergency surgery but did not survive his injuries.
In the wake of the shooting, loved ones gathered, lighting candles and embracing one another in a vigil to honor and remember Simmons. His mother expressed her profound grief, stating that he was just beginning to plan for his future, with aspirations of owning property and starting his own business.
The investigation into the death of the Black / African American male moved swiftly. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, an arrest was made. Myles King, a 21-year-old from Milton, was taken into custody on a murder warrant. During his arraignment, where a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf, it was revealed that in the moments after being shot, while fading in and out of consciousness, Simmons identified his attacker to the police as "Mizzy Cash." Investigators determined that "Mizzy Cash" was the name King used as a local rap artist.
Further details emerged during the court proceedings that suggested a history between the two men. In 2019, King had been arrested outside of Simmons' home while in possession of a loaded handgun in a stolen car. While the motive for the shooting was not definitively stated, Simmons' godmother mentioned that both men had an interest in rapping and may have known each other through their shared passion for music. The case from the 2019 incident was still pending at the time of the fatal shooting. Myles King was held without bail pending a probable cause hearing.
