On a late summer evening in Taunton, Massachusetts, the life of 71-year-old Dianne Velon Silveira, a White female, was brought to a tragic and violent end. On August 29, 2021, she was fatally shot in the driveway of her own home on Bay Street. The events of that night unfolded dramatically, beginning with a chilling phone call. Dianne's sister was on the phone with her shortly before 9 p.m. when she heard a scream before the line went dead.
After several failed attempts to reconnect, her sister contacted the Taunton Police.
Around the same time, a neighbor was startled by the sound of screaming coming from the Silveira's property, followed by the terrifying crackle of several gunshots. Peering out their window, the neighbor witnessed a horrific scene: Dianne was lying motionless in the driveway, and her husband, 86-year-old Edmund Silveira, was seen walking away from her body. When police arrived, they found Dianne suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Morton Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:22 p.m.
After shooting his wife, Edmund Silveira retreated into their home, turning off all the lights and refusing to communicate with law enforcement, which prompted a standoff with a SWAT team. Hours later, a tactical robot was deployed into the house and discovered Edmund unconscious on the kitchen floor. He had sustained self-inflicted knife wounds to his neck and wrists. He was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital for medical treatment.
The investigation into Dianne's death quickly focused on her husband. Initially charged with assault and battery with a firearm, the charges against Edmund Silveira were upgraded to murder. In a recorded confession, he admitted to shooting his wife, stating that he suspected her of having an affair, a claim that was unsubstantiated. He told police he had been arguing with his wife and did not want her to tell her sister about their dispute. He also stated that he had attempted to shoot himself after killing her, but the gun had jammed. In July 2023, at the age of 88, Edmund Silveira pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years for the murder of his wife.
