In the early morning hours of December 8, 2021, a night of celebration for Marcus Thibodeau's 27th birthday turned tragic in Worcester, Massachusetts. Thibodeau, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot alongside his 35-year-old brother, James Johnson, outside the Diamond Inn bar on Grafton Street. The brothers had reportedly gone to the bar around 1:40 a.m. and knocked on a window after last call had been announced, seeking entry.
This seemingly innocuous act is believed to have angered another patron.
Responding to a report of a shooting at approximately 1:57 a.m., Worcester Police officers discovered Thibodeau and Johnson on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds. Both men were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead. The double homicide sent shockwaves through the community and left family and friends mourning the sudden and violent loss of the two brothers. At the time of his death, Thibodeau was awaiting trial on gun charges related to a fatal shooting in Franklin, Massachusetts, in October 2020. While initial speculation considered retaliation as a possible motive for his death, the investigation took a different turn.
In April 2022, a significant development occurred in the case when Worcester Police arrested 37-year-old Christopher Burns in connection with the murders of Marcus Thibodeau and James Johnson. Burns was subsequently charged with two counts of murder and firearm violations. According to police reports, the act of knocking on the bar's window by one of the brothers is what allegedly provoked Burns, leading to the fatal shooting. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Burns fleeing the scene in his vehicle after the shots were fired. He was later arraigned and held without bail.
