In the late summer of 1930, a tragedy unfolded in the small community of Marcola, Oregon, forever marking August 29th as a day of loss. Oscar Lee Duley, a 35-year-old White male, lost his life in the line of duty. He served as a police officer with the Eugene Police Department.
On that fateful Friday, Officer Duley was part of a contingent of law enforcement officers, including several Lane County sheriff's deputies and Deputy Game Warden Joseph Saunders, conducting a raid on an illegal liquor operation. The era of Prohibition often led to dangerous confrontations, and this day proved to be no exception. During the course of the raid, a burst of gunfire erupted, cutting through the rural quiet.
In the ensuing violence, both Officer Duley and Deputy Game Warden Saunders were fatally wounded. The shots that rang out that day not only ended the lives of two dedicated officers but also sent shockwaves through the local community and law enforcement fraternity.
The individual responsible for the deaths of the two officers was not brought to trial. In the aftermath of the deadly raid, the suspect was also shot and killed, bringing a swift and violent end to the immediate investigation. The incident stood as a stark reminder of the perils faced by those sworn to uphold the law during a turbulent period in American history.
