In the quiet town of Mount Angel, Oregon, a beloved 64-year-old woman named Kathleen Marie Schwartz tragically lost her life in early August of 2014. The events that unfolded painted a grim picture of domestic violence that ended in a murder-suicide, leaving a family and a community in shock.
The ordeal began in the early morning hours of August 9, 2014, when a call to the police reported a possible hostage situation at Kathleen's residence.
It was her daughter, Elizabeth, who had managed to escape the home with her young son and alert the authorities. She informed them that her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Cuanas, was inside the house with her mother, armed and threatening to take his own life. This initiated a tense standoff as multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Mount Angel Police and the Marion County Sheriff's deputies, converged on the scene in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and secure Kathleen's safe release.
As the standoff wore on, a single gunshot was heard from within the house at approximately 5:00 a.m. When contact was made with Cuanas, he claimed the shot was an accidental discharge. Hours later, after attempts to resolve the situation peacefully failed, law enforcement officers made entry into the home around 10:00 a.m. Inside, they made a grim discovery. Kathleen Schwartz was found deceased in a back bedroom. Daniel Cuanas was also found dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The investigation that followed revealed a heartbreaking timeline of events. A note left by Cuanas stated that he had strangled Kathleen. Based on the evidence, authorities believe that she may have been killed on the evening of August 8th, prior to the arrival of law enforcement and the subsequent standoff. As the sole suspect in Kathleen's murder, Daniel Cuanas took his own life, bringing a violent end to the confrontation. No arrests were made in connection with her death. The community mourned the loss of a woman described as a wonderful and much-loved member of the community.
