On the evening of April 10, 2015, in a Southeast Portland apartment, a violent encounter left two people dead and one critically injured. Dat Gary Pham, a 33-year-old man of South East Asian descent, was fatally shot in what police would later describe as a double homicide connected to the medical marijuana industry. The other deceased victim was his 41-year-old sister-in-law, Sut-Leng "Susie" Chang.
The sole survivor of the initial attack was Dat's brother and Susie's husband, Andrew Toan Pham, who was critically wounded. Miraculously, Andrew and Susie's 13-week-old infant was found unharmed at the scene.
The investigation quickly led authorities to identify 26-year-old Colby James Robinson of Dallas, Texas, as the suspect. A warrant for two counts of aggravated murder was issued for his arrest. The manhunt for Robinson stretched from Oregon to Texas, where he was located days later. U.S. Marshals had him under surveillance at a Days Inn motel in DeSoto, a suburb of Dallas. On April 14, Robinson attempted to escape by jumping from a second-story window and fleeing in a U-Haul truck.
Robinson's flight from justice came to a dramatic end that same evening. After being spotted at a 7-Eleven by a clerk who recognized him from police photos, a chase ensued. The pursuit ended in a residential neighborhood in Dallas. Robinson abandoned the U-Haul and fled on foot. He was confronted by DeSoto police officers, and in the ensuing encounter, he was shot and killed. During the chase and final confrontation, a woman in a nearby vehicle was struck by gunfire but survived. Authorities confirmed that with Robinson's death, there were no other suspects in the Portland double homicide.
