In the small town of Chiloquin, Oregon, a gathering of people at a party on a September night in 2017 took a tragic turn, ending the life of 32-year-old Arnie Lee Eggsman. The male victim was at a party when a dispute erupted between him and two other men, Tevin Lafond, age 21, and Kyle Steele, also 21. The altercation escalated, tragically culminating in the fatal shooting of Eggsman on September 17, 2017.
Following the violent encounter, both Lafond, from Yerington, Nevada, and Steele,
from Carson City, Nevada, fled the scene. An investigation was launched, and authorities tracked the two suspects to Northern Nevada. Believing them to be hiding in Carson City and Lyon County, a coordinated effort among multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Carson City Sheriff's Office, Washoe Tribal Police, Oregon State Police, and law enforcement from Reno and Washoe County, was undertaken to apprehend them.
With the help of a witness in Oregon, authorities were able to locate the suspects. On the Monday following the shooting, a team of officers arrested Tevin Lafond in Lyon County around 6 p.m. Kyle Steele was not immediately found at his residence, which was located on tribal land in the Carson City Colony. After negotiations with his family, Steele turned himself in to the Sheriff's Office at 11 p.m. that same day. The Klamath County District Attorney credited the cooperation of the Chiloquin community and witnesses for the swift progress in the case, which was vital in the efforts to bring justice for the Eggsman family.
