On New Year's Day 2022, 18-year-old Dante McFallo, a Black male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Gresham, Oregon. At the time of the incident, McFallo was on a FaceTime call with his mother, Jozi McFallo. He had been staying away from his home due to concerns about a potential arrest by juvenile probation officers who had discovered painkillers in his bedroom the previous day.
The shooting was captured on a security camera, showing a young man approaching
McFallo in the parking lot on Southeast 187th Avenue and firing nine shots. The assailant, wearing a gray sweatshirt with the hood up and a pandemic-style mask, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Dante's phone fell to the ground, and his mother, still on the line, heard her son's voice and then saw an overcast sky on her screen, but did not hear the gunshots.
A resident of the apartment complex discovered McFallo's body and called 911. She picked up his phone and informed his mother that help was on the way, but could not bring herself to tell her that her son had died. Jozi McFallo rushed to the scene without a coat or shoes.
Despite the video evidence, Dante McFallo's murder remains unsolved. As of late 2022, there had been no arrests made in connection with his death, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The killing occurred amidst a significant increase in gun violence in both Gresham and the neighboring city of Portland.
