On a Sunday morning in the late summer of 2022, the life of 39-year-old Jeremiah James Johnson, a male member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, came to a tragic end. The events leading to his death on September 18, 2022, began with a call to Umatilla County 911 at approximately 10:36 A.M. reporting a domestic disturbance on Bingham Road, near Adams, Oregon, within the boundaries of the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

along with an officer from the Pendleton Police Department who was responding to a request for mutual aid, arrived at the scene. According to law enforcement officials, they were confronted by an armed Johnson. During this confrontation, both officers discharged their duty firearms, striking and killing him.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both officers involved were placed on administrative leave, a standard procedure in such incidents, pending the outcome of a thorough investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead in this investigation, with the Oregon State Crime Lab assisting in the collection and processing of evidence. At the time of the incident, Johnson had a pending criminal case against him for misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree assault and harassment, as well as a felony charge of aggravated harassment.
There have been no arrests made in connection with the death of Jeremiah Johnson, and no suspects have been named, as the incident was an officer-involved shooting. The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation Board of Trustees issued a statement expressing their deep condolences to the tribal community and acknowledging the unfortunate and tragic nature of the event. They also recognized the duty of law enforcement to protect the safety of the community members.
