Gabriela Jimenez Perez, a 43-year-old Hispanic female, was a cherished member of the Hillsboro, Oregon community whose life was tragically cut short on November 16, 2022. Born in Panorama City, California, Gabriela moved to Hillsboro as a young girl and became deeply rooted in the community. She was a dedicated mother to four daughters, a loving sister, and a respected professional who had previously worked as a substitute teacher for the Hillsboro School District before moving into the private
sector in Human Resources. Her friends and colleagues remembered her for her kindness, humor, and the warm, gracious presence she brought to every interaction.
On the evening of November 16, the lives of Gabriela and her family were irrevocably shattered. Washington County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at a residence in the Scholls area, just outside of Hillsboro. Upon arrival, they discovered a horrifying scene. Gabriela and her sister, Lenin Hernandez Rosas, were found deceased outside the home, both victims of gunshot wounds. Inside the residence, law enforcement found Gabriela's husband, 46-year-old Carlos Jimenez-Vargas, with what was described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and later succumbed to them.
The investigation that followed revealed a history of domestic violence that preceded the fatal encounter. Court records indicated that Carlos Jimenez-Vargas had been arrested in the months prior to the incident on charges that included strangulation and unlawful use of a weapon. A release agreement had been issued, which stipulated that he was to have no contact with Gabriela and was required to wear a GPS monitoring device. Despite these measures, Gabriela had sought additional protection. Just a month before her death, she had applied for a restraining order against her husband, but the request was denied by a Washington County Circuit Court judge. The tragic event has since become a case study in the challenges of protecting victims of domestic violence within the criminal justice system. The suspect in Gabriela's death was her husband, Carlos Jimenez-Vargas, who died by suicide after taking her life and that of her sister, leaving a community to mourn the profound loss of two vibrant women.
