In the summer of 1980, 19-year-old Nancy Santomero, a white female, and her companion, 26-year-old Vicki Durian, were making their way to the annual Rainbow Gathering in the mountains of West Virginia. The two women were hitchhiking through Pocahontas County on June 25th, anticipating a peaceful convergence of like-minded individuals, but they never reached their destination. Their journey was cut tragically short in an isolated clearing on Droop Mountain, where they were both shot and killed.
