Logan Patrick Pennington, a 26-year-old White/Caucasian male, was a senior at Shepherd University when a visit from his father ended in a deadly shooting on September 2, 2006, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Logan and his younger brother, Benjamin Mark Pennington, were both students at the university and were from Scherr in Grant County. Their father, Douglas W. Pennington, traveled from the Grant County area to Shepherdstown that Saturday to see his sons. What began as a family visit became an apparent double murder-suicide on the university campus.
At approximately 2 p.m., Douglas Pennington encountered his sons in a parking area on the west side of campus, identified by authorities as the parking lot of Thacher Residence Hall and described in other reports as an area between campus buildings. State Police said Douglas was armed with a. 38-caliber revolver.
He opened fire on Logan and Benjamin, shooting both of them multiple times before turning the weapon on himself and firing a single shot into his chest. Reports from the scene described students seeing three wounded men on the ground while people rushed forward and attempted CPR.
Emergency personnel transported all three members of the Pennington family to medical facilities. Logan was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, where he died from his injuries. Benjamin was taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg, while Douglas was transported to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland; both also died. The violence stunned Shepherd University, where Logan and Benjamin were seniors. University officials emphasized that there was no continuing threat to the campus, while counselors were made available to students coping with the sudden deaths. The shooting occurred during Labor Day weekend, when the campus was reportedly quieter than usual because many students were away.
Investigators identified Douglas Pennington as the person responsible for killing both of his sons. Authorities initially had no clear explanation for what caused him to attack them. State Police Sgt. C.C. Morton described the possible motive only as some type of family issue, without publicly providing additional details. Trooper K.W. Martin said investigators were still trying to determine why Douglas killed his sons and whether he had traveled to Shepherd University already intending to murder them. Accounts also indicated that witnesses had not observed an argument between Douglas and his sons immediately before the shooting, leaving the sudden eruption of violence particularly difficult to explain.
There was no arrest, criminal trial, or conviction in Logan Pennington's killing because the identified gunman, Douglas Pennington, fatally shot himself during the same incident. The investigation therefore centered on reconstructing what had happened and attempting to determine a motive rather than prosecuting a surviving suspect.
