A morning of violence on January 10, 2017, tragically ended the life of 40-year-old Brandy Lynn Hardman, a White female from the Mineral Wells, West Virginia area. What began as an attempt to help a friend in distress spiraled into a fatal confrontation, leaving a family shattered and a community in shock. The incident unfolded at a mobile home on Nova Road, the residence of Karen Sampson.
Karen was in the midst of a domestic dispute with her ex-husband, Jeff Sampson, and had called upon
her friends, Brandy and Shawn Hardman, for assistance. The couple arrived at the home, and shortly after, between 8 and 9 a.m., Jeff Sampson also appeared at the residence. An altercation broke out, and the situation escalated with unimaginable speed. Gunfire erupted, and in the chaos, both Brandy and her husband were shot. Brandy Lynn Hardman was pronounced dead at the scene, her life cut short in a place she had gone to offer help. Her husband, Shawn Michael Hardman, was critically injured and rushed to Camden Clark Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his wounds. Karen Sampson, though unharmed, was left to witness the horrific outcome of the dispute, placing a call to 911 along with neighbors who were alerted by the sound of gunshots.
The man identified as the shooter, 46-year-old Jeff Sampson, fled the scene immediately after the incident. He first went to his parents' nearby home, where he got into his truck and drove off. This sparked a multi-county manhunt as law enforcement issued a bulletin for his vehicle. The pursuit came to an end on Interstate 79 in Braxton County, about three hours after the deadly shooting. After a chase that saw him driving erratically across the median to avoid capture, Sampson was apprehended by the West Virginia State Police. He was arrested and subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Brandy and Shawn Hardman. In the following days, Jeff Sampson appeared in court and was denied bond for his alleged role in the double homicide.
