On a tragic evening in Jefferson County, West Virginia, the life of John Wilson, a 27-year-old Black male, was abruptly ended by gunfire. The events of March 23, 2020, unfolded near Summit Point, stemming from a domestic dispute that escalated into a fatal encounter. A woman, accompanied by her young child, had gotten into an argument with a man identified as Jeremy Newkirk.
Seeking to leave the residence, she reached out to Wilson for help, asking him to come and pick them up.
Wilson arrived at the Wood End Farm Lane residence, unaware of the danger that awaited. As the woman and her child were placing their belongings into his vehicle, preparing to depart, Newkirk allegedly opened fire, striking Wilson. In a turn of events, it was Newkirk himself who contacted the authorities, admitting that he had shot someone and that he would be waiting for law enforcement to arrive at the scene.
Upon their arrival, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office found Wilson suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries. Based on the evidence and statements gathered at the scene, investigators arrested 31-year-old Jeremy Newkirk. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Newkirk was then transported to the Eastern Regional Jail, where he was held without bond.
