On a tragic day in Williamsburg, West Virginia, four-year-old Kian Matthew Myers, a White male, lost his life in a devastating event that shook the community. On December 8, 2020, Kian, along with his four siblings, was found deceased in what authorities would later describe as a horrific murder-suicide. The home where the children were found had been set ablaze, a desperate act following an unimaginable tragedy.
The perpetrator of this heartbreaking act was the children's own mother,
25-year-old Oreanna Myers. Investigations revealed that Myers had been grappling with severe mental health issues. Her husband was away for work, a situation made more difficult by the family's lack of transportation after a car accident. This isolation is believed to have intensified her struggles. On that fateful December day, after picking up two of the older children from the school bus, Oreanna Myers used a shotgun to end the lives of her five children.
Following the discovery of the fire by a neighbor, emergency services arrived to a grim scene. The children's bodies were found inside the charred remains of their home. Oreanna Myers was found outside, having taken her own life with the same weapon. Handwritten notes left behind by Myers expressed her deep remorse and confessed to the killings, stating, "This is no one's fault but my own. My demons won over me. Sorry, I wasn't strong enough." As Oreanna Myers was identified as the sole person responsible for the deaths, and because she died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the case, which was closed following the investigation.
