On February 2, 1984, 29-year-old Timothy Charles Earney was found dead in his home at 322 N. Eighth Street in Albia, Iowa. His live-in girlfriend, Dorothy Kempf, discovered his body; he had been shot twice in the head.

Kempf informed investigators that she had been living with Earney for about a month. She also mentioned that her estranged husband had previously threatened to kill Earney.
