In the summer of 2010, the life of a Caucasian male, 16-year-old James David Doyle of Indianola, Iowa, was tragically cut short. On June 27, James, a student at Indianola High School with a passion for woodshop, weight lifting, and NASCAR, died from a single shotgun blast to his upper torso. The incident occurred at the home of his friend, 14-year-old Daniel Nadler.
The events leading to James's death reportedly stemmed from an argument between the two teenagers about religion.
The disagreement escalated, culminating in Nadler fatally shooting Doyle. Indianola Police Chief Steve Bonnett stated that the shooting was not accidental and that angry words had been exchanged after the boys had been up all night handling the gun.
Daniel Nadler was initially charged with first-degree murder for the death of his friend. However, the legal proceedings took a turn that left James's family feeling that justice had not been served. A judge ruled that Nadler would not be tried as an adult, and the charge was subsequently lowered to second-degree murder.
Ultimately, in October 2010, a plea agreement was reached. Daniel Allen Nadler pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. As a result of the plea deal, he was to be incarcerated until he turned 18. This outcome was a source of great pain for Doyle's family, who felt the punishment did not fit the gravity of the crime.
