Erick Reyna, a 22-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on January 25, 2015, in a rural area of Osceola, Iowa. His death, along with that of his acquaintance, 27-year-old Noe Flores Rascon, was the result of a violent encounter that unfolded after they were reported missing the previous day. The two men were discovered deceased from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle in northern Clarke County, a grim end to what began as a night out.
The investigation into their deaths quickly led authorities to focus on a group of local residents with whom the victims were acquainted.
The primary suspect in the double homicide was identified as 38-year-old Richard Ryan Lamb Carson of Osceola. Carson was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. The investigation revealed that the victims had been at a residence in Osceola where an altercation took place. According to court documents, a witness reported hearing Carson speak of assaulting two individuals and leaving them in the county. While Carson admitted to an altercation with Rascon during which a gun was discharged, he initially claimed that his actions were in self-defense. This claim was contested by the prosecution, who built a case suggesting a more deliberate and violent series of events. The murder weapon, a. 357 revolver, was later recovered from a storm drain outside the home of Carson's then-girlfriend.
In addition to Carson, three other individuals were implicated for their roles after the murders. Lynn Ranean Sutton, 47, Christopher Martin Elben, 42, and Tracy Kay Johnson, 43, all from Osceola, were charged with accessory after the fact. These charges stemmed from allegations that they assisted Carson after the commission of the crime. Johnson was identified as Carson's girlfriend at the time. Authorities indicated that all the individuals involved, both victims and suspects, were known to each other and had prior histories with law enforcement.
The legal process that followed the arrests culminated in the conviction of Richard Carson. In May 2017, a jury found him guilty on both counts of first-degree murder. During the trial, expert testimony confirmed that the bullets found in the victims matched the gun recovered by police. The medical examiner's testimony suggested that Erick Reyna may have been in a defensive posture when he was shot, with evidence of bullet wounds to his hand and arm. The motive for the killings was not definitively established during the proceedings, though the altercation preceding the deaths was a central point of the investigation. The conviction brought a measure of resolution to the case, holding the main perpetrator accountable for the violent deaths of the two young men.
