On April 24, 2016, 25-year-old Black male Justin T. Bowman was fatally shot in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. At approximately 6:15 p.m., while walking with a group near the 3900 block of West Diversey Avenue—just half a mile from his residence—he was approached by 24-year-old Alfredo Ramos. Ramos exited a vehicle and opened fire, striking Bowman in the chest. Bowman was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries at 7:07 p.m.
Following an investigation, Alfredo Ramos was arrested and charged with first-degree murder for the shooting of Justin T. Bowman. On December 9, 2016, a judge ordered that Ramos be held without bond. His next court appearance was scheduled for December 28, 2016.
Justin T. Bowman was remembered as a father and a graduate of Avondale, Logandale, and Schurz schools. He was described by those who knew him as funny, outspoken, adventurous, athletic, talented, artistic, loving, loyal, and talented. His death was one of many during a year when Chicago experienced a significant increase in gun violence, with 764 homicides recorded in 2016, marking a 58% rise from the previous year.
