In the small Utah mining town of Scofield, the evening of October 5, 1902, was shattered by the sounds of a raucous party that had grown too loud for the neighbors' comfort. A complaint was lodged, and Scofield Town Marshal Hugh Hunter recognized the potential for trouble. To assist him, he deputized a 28-year-old man, Thomas Nalley. Together, Marshal Hunter and Deputy Nalley went to address the disturbance, stepping into a volatile situation that would tragically cut Nalley's life short.
