In the summer of 1987, Gerry Lanell Ivie, a 52-year-old White male, served as a Lieutenant with the Duchesne County Sheriff's Department in Utah. On July 2nd of that year, an incident unfolded that would tragically end his life. Law enforcement had established a roadblock in Ioka, a small community in Duchesne County, with the intention of apprehending a suspect.
During the operation at the roadblock, a fellow officer accidentally discharged their weapon.
The bullet struck Lieutenant Ivie, inflicting a fatal wound. His death was a result of this tragic accident in the line of duty, a friendly fire incident rather than a malicious act. Consequently, there was no search for suspects, and no arrests were made in connection with his death.
Gerry Ivie was born on October 18, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a married man and a father. At the time of his passing, he was a resident of Myton, Utah, and was buried there following his untimely death. His end of watch on that July day marked a somber moment for the Duchesne County Sheriff's Department and the community he served.
