On a tragic evening in Ogden, Utah, the life of a two-year-old girl named Sarah An was cut short in an act of violence that also claimed her family. On November 12, 1989, Sarah, her six-year-old brother Phillip, and their thirty-four-year-old mother, Nan Heu An, were all found deceased in their family's apartment located above their grocery store, Hans Market, at 730 28th Street.
The grim discovery was made after Sarah's thirty-three-year-old father, Kyu Suhn An, contacted his brother in
Texas and confessed to the killings. The brother immediately alerted the authorities. When police arrived at approximately 8:23 p.m., they found the bodies of Nan Heu An on a couch and the two children in a bedroom. Each had been shot once in the head.
Kyu Suhn An was found inside the grocery store with a. 38 caliber revolver nearby, having also shot himself in the head. He was initially alive when officers arrived but succumbed to his injuries shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
In the aftermath of the devastating event, investigators were unable to determine a clear motive for the murder-suicide. With the perpetrator identified as Kyu Suhn An, the case was closed. No arrests were made, and no other suspects were ever sought in connection with the deaths of Sarah An and her family.
