On a crisp autumn morning in West Jordan, Utah, the life of 39-year-old Ronald Fred Wood, a White male, was tragically cut short. It was November 18, 2002, and the dedicated police officer was on duty, unaware that his path would cross with a troubled 17-year-old, leading to a fatal encounter. The teenager was already on the radar of law enforcement, wanted in connection with a string of local robberies.
The day took a dark turn when Officer Wood spotted the young suspect in a park
located at 2350 West 7500 South. A foot pursuit ensued, the officer closing in on the juvenile. In a desperate act, the teenager opened fire, a single shot striking Officer Wood in the head. The officer was gravely wounded and airlifted to University Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them three hours later. He had served with the West Jordan Police Department for eight years.
Following the shooting, the 17-year-old suspect's desperate bid for freedom continued. He unsuccessfully attempted to carjack two vehicles before other officers caught up with him in a nearby park. As a detective fired at him, the young man made a final, tragic decision, taking his own life. The community was left to mourn the loss of a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend who was remembered for his dedication to his job and his love for his family. In a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice, a five-field baseball complex in West Jordan was named 'The Ron Wood Baseball Park' in August of the following year.
