On a winter day in West Haven, Utah, the life of Arthur Sherman Backus, a 48-year-old male, came to a violent and abrupt end. On February 3, 2006, outside his own home, he was confronted by an assailant in his driveway. The man, identified as 44-year-old Warren Dee Fellows, fatally shot Backus multiple times. The motive for this tragic event was later revealed to be Fellows' discovery of an affair between his wife and Backus.
Following the shooting, Fellows did not flee the scene. Instead, he remained, armed with both a shotgun and a handgun. When law enforcement officers responded to a 911 call, they found Fellows brandishing the weapons. He then pointed the firearms at the deputies, which led to an officer, Sgt. Jeff Pledger, shooting and wounding him. Fellows was taken to a hospital where he remained under police guard until he was well enough to be transferred to the Weber County Jail.
The legal process that followed saw Warren Dee Fellows booked on charges that included first-degree felony murder and aggravated assault. In court, he pleaded guilty to these charges. A judge described the crime as an "absolutely senseless tragedy" that had far-reaching consequences for multiple families. Fellows was sentenced to serve consecutive prison terms of six years to life for the murder and an additional term of up to five years for the aggravated assault.
