In the quiet town of Syracuse, Utah, the life of 13-year-old Caucasian female Kenadee Oliva was tragically cut short on the evening of Tuesday, January 14, 2014. What began as a seemingly ordinary day ended in a devastating act of violence that also claimed the lives of her younger sister and their mother. The family had only recently moved to the area, seeking a fresh start that would instead culminate in a horrific murder-suicide.
That evening, police responded to reports of gunfire at
their home. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Kenadee, her 7-year-old sister Isabella Oliva, and their 32-year-old mother, Kyler Ramsdell-Oliva. All three had sustained fatal gunshot wounds in what investigators quickly determined to be a murder-suicide carried out by the mother. There were no other suspects, and the investigation was subsequently closed.
In the days leading up to the tragedy, Kyler had been experiencing significant personal turmoil. She and her fiancé had recently ended their relationship, and he had been at the residence the night before to retrieve his belongings, an encounter that prompted a police presence to ensure a peaceful exchange. Neighbors reported a distraught man in the driveway on the night of the incident, who was later identified as the former fiancé and was cleared of any involvement. A friend of Kyler's later revealed that she had been battling depression and was heartbroken over the breakup.
