The central figure in this tragedy was Christopher Poulson, Emily's 30-year-old boyfriend at the time. Initially, Poulson claimed that he and Emily had an argument, after which she and Gabriel left. However, as the investigation progressed, a much darker story began to unfold. Cell phone records and evidence of Poulson purchasing a shovel and work gloves raised suspicions. In August 2019, he pleaded guilty to the murder of Emily Almiron and the manslaughter of her son, Gabriel. Poulson was sentenced to serve 16 years to life in prison for his crimes.
