In the early morning hours of July 16, 2017, the life of 25-year-old Paige Espinoza was tragically cut short in what police would describe as a targeted attack in Magna, Utah. A female, Espinoza was visiting a home on West Mix Avenue when multiple gunshots were fired from outside into the southeast basement bedroom where she was located. First responders, arriving around 5:15 a.m. following a 911 call from someone else in the house, found Espinoza deceased from gunshot wounds.
She did not live at the residence but was visiting at the time of the shooting.
The investigation into the homicide quickly suggested a drive-by or walk-by shooting. Authorities noted that the home had been associated with gang activity in the past, leading them to initially explore that as a possible motive. Three other individuals present in the home were questioned by police. Investigators determined that numerous rounds were fired into the specific room Espinoza occupied, indicating she was not a random victim, although it was later suspected that her boyfriend may have been the intended target.
The investigation led police to identify two suspects. Initially, 46-year-old Todd Elwin Hull was taken into custody and admitted to being the driver during the drive-by shooting. However, the primary suspect in the shooting itself was identified as 46-year-old Gino James Cecala. It was revealed that Cecala had been in a conflict with Espinoza's boyfriend and had made "multiple threats" to kill both of them prior to the shooting. A $1 million arrest warrant was issued for Cecala, who had a significant criminal history dating back to 1990.
After a months-long search, Gino James Cecala was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Dallas, Texas, on December 5, 2017, and was extradited back to Utah to face charges. In May 2019, a jury found Cecala guilty of murder, obstruction of justice, and multiple counts of discharging a firearm. He was subsequently sentenced to a term of up to life in prison for the death of Paige Espinoza, a young mother who had dreams of attending beauty school. Police believe the shooter fired blindly through the window, intending to harm her boyfriend, but instead tragically killed Espinoza.
