In the quiet town of Mapleton, Utah, a deeply disturbing event unfolded in November 2017, shattering the community's sense of peace. A 16-year-old Caucasian female, Samantha Badel, a sophomore at Maple Mountain High School, was found deceased in her home alongside her mother, Jessica Griffith, her 5-year-old half-brother, Alexandre Griffith, and her stepfather, Timothy Griffith.
The family dog was also discovered deceased at the scene.
Authorities were alerted to the situation after family members and friends grew concerned when they were unable to contact the family for several days. Upon entering the home, police discovered the four family members, all of whom had been shot. The investigation led law enforcement to believe the incident was a murder-suicide.
The evidence suggested that Timothy Griffith was the perpetrator, taking the lives of his wife, stepdaughter, and son before taking his own. Counseling services were made available to the students at Maple Mountain High School to help them cope with the loss of their classmate.
