On a June day in 2018, the life of 24-year-old Julio Rodriguez, a Hispanic male, was cut short in a violent encounter near Randlett, Utah. The events that led to his death began with a physical altercation outside a local store. Following the fight, Rodriguez and another man, Brandon Redfoot, then 22 years old, went their separate ways in different vehicles.
The conflict, however, was far from over.
Redfoot, armed with a KelTec Sub-2000 9mm folding rifle, compelled the driver of his vehicle to turn around and pursue Rodriguez. When the driver initially refused, Redfoot fired a shot inside the car, a menacing act that ensured his demand was met. They followed Rodriguez to a residence on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation.
Outside the home, Redfoot unleashed a barrage of at least 29 shots in the direction of Rodriguez and others who were present. A single bullet struck Rodriguez in the back of the head. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, on June 7, 2018. The shooting was described by authorities as a senseless act of violence that endangered multiple lives.
Law enforcement, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the FBI, investigated the killing. Brandon Redfoot was arrested the day after the shooting. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and other offenses related to the use of a firearm. After a five-day trial, a federal jury found Redfoot guilty. He was later sentenced to 45 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and was also ordered to pay restitution.
