On a Tuesday evening, February 6, 2007, a devastating event unfolded in Hartford, Connecticut, that would forever alter the lives of one family. Deanna Long Pugh, a 45-year-old female, had just finished a visit with one of her eleven grandchildren. She was a mother to four children and was excitedly anticipating the arrival of her twelfth grandchild.
Known as a radiant presence who "shined on everybody she touched," her life was centered around her large and loving family.
She pulled her car over and parked on the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Zion Street, just outside a local grocery store. Inside the vehicle, her 22-year-old daughter and 8-year-old granddaughter waited as she stepped outside to have a cigarette. In an instant, the ordinary moment turned tragic. A dark-colored Honda, believed to be a model from the years 1990-2000, approached her parked car. A single gunshot was fired from the vehicle, striking Deanna in the chest. The Honda then sped away from the scene, leaving chaos and heartbreak in its wake.
In the immediate aftermath, Deanna's daughter and two witnesses rushed to her side, helping to get her into the back seat of her own car in a desperate attempt to get her to the hospital. An ambulance intercepted them en route, but the single gunshot wound proved to be fatal. Deanna was pronounced dead upon arrival at Hartford Hospital. Despite having a person of interest early in the investigation, law enforcement officials were unable to make an arrest due to a lack of sufficient evidence. The case has since gone cold, and no suspects have been publicly named or charged in her murder, leaving her family with unanswered questions and an enduring sense of loss.
