In the spring of 2017, the life of a vibrant and beloved White Caucasian woman, Melissa Lynn Wilkinson, was tragically cut short at the age of 33. On the evening of Sunday, April 30, 2017, in Norwalk, Connecticut, a sequence of events unfolded that would leave a community in mourning. Melissa, a well-known and popular server in several South Norwalk restaurants, was found deceased in her Wilton Avenue apartment.
Her death was the result of a fatal gunshot wound to the head, an act of violence that abruptly ended a life full of adventure and connection.
The discovery was made by concerned coworkers who, after she failed to appear for her shift, went to check on her. Peering through a window, they saw her motionless on the floor and made the difficult decision to force their way into the apartment. Inside, their grim discovery was twofold: Melissa was deceased, and her 55-year-old father, Mark Wilkinson, was also present, seated on a couch and holding a weapon. The coworkers immediately fled and alerted the authorities, initiating a police response that would extend for hours.
Upon their arrival, law enforcement established a perimeter and a standoff ensued with Mark Wilkinson, who remained inside the apartment. During the standoff, a single gunshot was heard from within the residence. A police camera later revealed that Mark Wilkinson had taken his own life. Investigators determined that Melissa’s death was the result of a murder-suicide orchestrated by her father. A friend of Melissa’s later revealed that Mark had been living with his daughter for two years, and that she had asked him to move out on the day of the incident.
